Genealogy 101 (Dallas Morning News)

Erin Wade has written an article for the Dallas Morning News (registration maybe required), Genealogy 101, targeted towards genealogists just getting started. In addition to several good tips and resources that any new genealogist could use, Erin also lists some resources available to genealogists in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Excerpt from the article:

Anything can spark interest in family history, be it an old gravestone, an enlightening chat with a great-aunt or dusty photo found in the attic. Who were these ancestors? What were their lives like? What traits do you share with them?

The answers to those questions come with time, dedication, a lot of work and a fondness for libraries, but surprisingly, not as much money as you may think. If you do most of your research at the library, it can cost you mere change for photocopies of records, rather than hundreds of dollars in membership fees to online companies.

We’ve talked to some local experts in the genealogical field who’ve given us advice on the easiest ways to get started.
