Hispanics Uncovering Roots as Inquisition’s ‘Hidden’ Jews

Three different people emailed me this article last night, Hispanics Uncovering Roots as Inquisition’s ‘Hidden’ Jews. It’s an article from the New York Times, by Simon Romero, and unfortunately a subscription is required. It covers Hispanics in the southwestern USA and northern Mexico who are looking at their roots, and how some are converting t Judaism – they may have been descended from Jews who fled the Spanish Inquisition (and some make pretty compelling arguments, based on family traditions that have been passed down, that were distinctly Jewish in origin.

One person sent me a link to a website, The Hidden Jews of New Mexico, that covers this in more detail (and that doesn’t require a registration).

As more people turn to genealogy, I think many will be surprised at what they find.
